Jane Doe is an exciting combination of two veteran performers in the Pacific Northwest.
Sonny “Smokin” Hess is the lead guitar player and vocalist for The Sonny Hess Band. She was awarded Best Lead Guitar by the Cascade Blues Association. Sonny has performed, sung with and composed with many of the region’s top artists. For 25 years she has produced multiple specialty shows featuring the finest blues women in the Pacific Northwest. Sonny has been the driving force in making each show a stand out for audiences which have garnered national attention and rave reviews “
Ellen Whyte fronts the multi award winning band, Ellen Whyte Ensemble. Ellen is a rhythm guitarist and vocalist who was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall Of Fame in 2015 and in 2006, The Cascade Blues Association Hall Of Fame. Respectively, both Sonny and Ellen have received high marks for their work along with many additional awards they’ve garnered
throughout the years.
The audiences who’ve followed them are known as Doeheads.
The combination of their considerable talents gives us something that is not rock, not folk, not blues, but something hypothetical as the name “Jane Doe” might suggest. All it takes is two exceptional voices and two guitars to pull it off.
Make it a Trio.....
Kelly Pierce our percussion/drum man is like a brother to Sonny as they have played together for over 30 years. He is in sync wit her groove and knows how to anticipate her next move. Kelly is an emotional player with dynamics that make him an
Ace up our sleeve.
In 1995, Jane Doe emerged from a need to put a duo together overnight to play a last minute gig. From that first gig it was evident that Jane Doe was something special. And after a long hiatus, Jane Doe is back!
“The duo of the times!”

Reviews
"Both women are capable of penning some clever original tunes, and their individual voices and strengths on vocals and guitars mesh together smoothly.” --Tim Casebeer, Willamette Week
“As Jane Doe, both Ellen Whyte and Sonny Hess have written songs of note, and with Hess being the stronger guitarist and Whyte the more powerful vocalist, the two complement one another well.” --Dan Deprez, Freelance Journalist, Portland, Oregon
